Werner Schou and Coronell Elektro

Werner Schou was the owner and principal designer of Coronell Elektro, a Danish lighting company known for sculptural pendants in copper, brass and aluminium.

Biography

The Danish company register gives his full name as Werner August Hugo Schou; his first name is sometimes written Verner. He was managing director of A/S Coronell Elektro from its foundation on 24 August 1964, with its address in Hellerup, near Copenhagen. The company went into voluntary liquidation on 1 July 1991 and was dissolved on 17 October 1991. Some auction and marketplace sites give his dates as 1913 to 1995, but without citing a source, and we have not been able to confirm them. Company advertisements of the early 1970s credit all Coronell designs to Schou, and the magazine Mobilia named him as designer and producer in 1968.

Style and materials

Coronell lamps often combine staggered metal slats with perforations and inserts in faceted glass, crystal or acrylic. Copper, brass, aluminium and chrome are the main materials. The lamps are frequently, and wrongly, attributed to Hans-Agne Jakobsson: period advertisements and Mobilia credit Werner Schou.
