Louis Weisdorf
Danish architect and industrial designer Louis Weisdorf drew some of the most graphic pendants of the 1960s for the Copenhagen manufacturer Lyfa.
Biography
Louis Weisdorf was born on 29 March 1932 and died on 9 January 2021. He studied at the School of Architecture of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1954. He worked with Poul Henningsen and Verner Panton, and from 1961 at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen under Simon Henningsen, before opening his own office in 1967.
Like Henningsen, he aimed to shield the eye from the bare bulb. GUBI reissues his Multi-Lite and Turbo lamps today.
Signature designs
- Konkylie ("conch"), model P483, for Lyfa: designed in 1963 and hung in Tivoli from 1964; curved metal bands wrapped around the bulb.
- Facet, 1963, and Facet Pop, 1970, for Lyfa.
- Turbo, designed in the mid-1960s and produced from 1967, with spiral lamellae forming a globe; it received an iF Design Award according to GUBI.
- Multi-Lite, 1972, first made by Lyfa: two shades rotate around a core to direct the light up, down or sideways.
